The trouble with nature shows

… Is that watching them makes The Four-Year-Old very curious. And that means I spend an awful lot of time looking at pictures like this.

After turning off a National Geographic special on the oceans last night, The Four-Year-Old asked: “Is Cozy an invertebrate?”

Mommyo: “No.”

The Four-Year-Old: “Why not?”

Mommyo: “He has bones on the inside, like a dinosaur.”

The Four-Year-Old: “What if he had bones on the outside, Mommyo?”

Mommyo: “That would be weird. He wouldn’t be a cat.”

The Four-Year-Old: “What would he be?”

Mommyo: “I don’t know.”

Pause, then The Four-Year-Old: “Are there any furry invertebrates?”

Mommyo, whose long experience with The Four-Year-Old has given her a pretty good idea of where this is going: “Yes, but you can’t bring any of them home.”

The Four-Year-Old: “Why not?”

Mommyo: “Daddyo doesn’t like spiders and I refuse to cook lobster.”
