Wordless Wednesday: Monk Parakeets in Snow

Originally brought to the Midwest from South America as captive birds in the late 1970s, over the years a number of Monk Parakeets have escaped captivity and established a thriving colony in Chicago. These subtropical birds remain in Chicago all year round, relying on their haystack-like nests and bird feeders maintained by their human neighbors to see them through our bitterly cold winters.  Four of them live in the trees behind our condo. I was deeply relieved to see them still going strong after the recent polar vortex.
