Amazingly, this is just someone’s front yard. Every time I look at this photo, my brain tries to tell me that there’s a river swooping along the bottom of that tree with the orange leaves. But really it’s just dirt.
Have you heard about the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Every Kid in a Park program? In a nutshell, the program offers fourth graders (and 10-year-old home-schooled equivalents) a free annual pass to every National Park in the U.S. Between now and August 31, 2019, fourth graders can use their passes to get free admission to any park in the National Park system for themselves and a select number of family and friends.
This fall I’ve been volunteering in my daughter’s middle school library. Mostly the job involves shelving books kids have already read and helping kids find the books they’d like to read next. But a few weeks ago, I was promoted to Apprentice Book Repair Person. My first mission? Make Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins readable again.
One of the things I love about the public schools here in California is that the buildings are often covered with murals painted by the students. This week for Wordless Wednesday, I’m highlighting portions of the Endangered Species Mural at Juana Briones Elementary School. The mural was painted by the school’s fifth grade class of 1994. (Check the last picture for the list of artists.)
