What’s The Eight-Year-Old reading this week?
Our mostly-weekly survey of the tidbits that cross The Eight-Year-Old’s desk. This week, The Eight-Year-Old does math with cats and discovers a new-to-her-book buried under her Elvis wig.

The Further Adventures of Penrose the mathematical cat by Theoni Pappas
I bought this back when The Eight-Year-Old was merely four, not because I thought there was any chance of her being able to do anything with it then, but because I knew the day would come when The Eight-Year-Old would forget math could be fun. I wanted this book in my back pocket.
The Eight-Year-Old has dipped into it here and there over the years, enticed by the prospect of doing math with a cat. She’s still not completely ready for it, but I haven’t regretted my purchase. The prospect of learning enough math to solve problems with Penrose has helped me keep The Eight-Year-Old from chucking her math worksheets out the window.
The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Little Princess is another book we acquired when The Eight-Year-Old was far too young for it. This one I squirreled away in her room under a pile of stuffed animals and dress-up clothes as a gift to The Eight-Year-Old’s future self. (Ha! Just kidding.)
The real story is that this book just ended up in my daughter’s room somehow, probably because the cover of our version is pink. At some point it became buried under her Elvis costume, and only emerged this week through sheer serendipity. Is The Eight-Year-Old actually ready for a book in which a heart-breaking tragedy leaves the main character friendless and alone? I don’t know. It’ll be interesting to find out.
