What’s The Eight-Year-Old reading this week?
Our mostly-weekly survey of the tidbits that cross The Eight-Year-Old’s desk. This week, The Eight-Year-Old takes her first steps toward becoming a world-class literary tourist, cradles a crocodile, and shops for antiques.

The Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone
A week or two ago, Daddyo and I began our sneaky plan to turn The Eight-Year-Old into a literature tourist. Based on the recommendation of a friend, Daddyo gave The Eight-Year-Old a copy of Marianne Malone’s The Sixty-Eight Rooms. This magical adventure takes place within the sixty-eight pint-sized and meticulously crafted Thorne Rooms at the Chicago Art Institute. Ever since reading the book, The Eight-Year-Old has been on fire to see the Thorne Rooms for herself. Sadly, when we biked out to the Art Institute to see them, it was a glorious day and we ended up spending all of our time at Maggie Daley Park. Next time, we’ll have to take the bus.

Good Housekeeping’s Best Book of Animal Stories, edited by Pauline Rush Evans
The Eight-Year-Old’s grandparents took her antiquing this last week. When The Eight-Year-Old goes antiquing, she likes to look for old-timey books and new outfits for Tigery. I don’t know how Tigery fared on her latest venture, but The Eight-Year-Old’s library of old-timey books has certainly expanded. The Eight-Year-Old tells me that although both collections of stories from the 1950s make for excellent bedtime reading, she likes the animal stories better.
In the news:
As always, it was a good week for dinosaur news, but the most important piece of news from The Eight-Year-Old’s perspective is the fact that this week she held her very first baby crocodile alligator. She would like you to know three things about this experience:
1) His skin felt leathery, not scaly.
2) His name was Mr. Cuddles.
3) She was the only child in the group brave enough to hold the crocodile alligator herself, instead of making the caretaker do it.
While photographic evidence of this event does exist, Mr. Cuddles was not up for taking a second Caterpickles shot, which means you will have to content yourself with this picture of Canelo’s reaction to hearing the news.
“Wait, what? You are not going to make me do that, are you?”
