“What does a new-fashioned gas mask look like?”

Several months ago, The Five-Year-Old and I were reading Stephen and Lucy Hawking’s children’s book George’s Secret Key to the Universe when we came across a picture of Dr. Reaper wearing an old-fashioned gas mask sort of like the one in the picture below.
After I explained to The Five-Year-Old what it was and why Dr. Reaper was wearing it, she very naturally wanted to know…
“What does a new-fashioned gas mask look like?”
Because I believe in answering these sorts of questions in a timely fashion, I looked up the answer today.
On Wikipedia (where else?) I found this wonderful picture of Photographer’s Mate 1st Class Mike Pendergrass wearing a gas mask during a field exercise in 2004.
Gas mask design sure has come a long way in the last thirty to forty years, hasn’t it?

I like the look of the “new fashioned” gas masks better’ I always thought that the masks used in the 70s looked like killer birds or something lol.

Yes, the new ones are much less terrifying for all concerned. Better visibility for the wearer too I expect.
